Security Procedures and TSA Screening at CHS

Since 2015, a consolidated Transportation Security Administration security checkpoints are operated for both Concourse A, and Concourse B. TSA classified the Charleston International Airport to be a security-level Category I airport.

TSA ensures the security and safety of all air travelers, and they must undergo screening at the checkpoint via pat-down or technology. The screening process includes the removal of belongings and items such as belts, shoes, or jackets. TSA agents may swab your hands, equipment, mobility aids, and other medical devices to check and detect the availability of explosives.

CHS Required Documents / Real-ID

The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles started issuing the REAL IDs for air travelers flying within the United States. Passengers should be aware that their current unexpired South Carolina driver's license will be allowed to enter the airport’s security area and board on a domestic or/and commercial flight until September 30, 2020. For international flights, passengers will need an unexpired passport as proof of identification. Those passengers who have a military license, a valid passport, or other federal I.D. that is accepted by the airport to enter security checkpoints, can use this form of documents instead of changing South Carolina driver's license.

All passengers who are the citizens of South Carolina must present a Real ID or other federally approved I.D. to board a domestic or/and commercial flight on or after October 1, 2020. Note that the driver's license should be marked with a gold star, as a sign of a Real ID.

Security Checkpoints and Departure Time at CHS

At Charleston International Airport, the TSA security checkpoint operates daily and opens at 4 a.m. until 8 p.m. (works until the last scheduled departing flight). Sometimes, the inspection may remain open later or close earlier, depending on flight schedules. All airlines have the responsibility to inform the TSA in case of delays and extended checkpoint working hours.

Air travelers are advised by CHS to arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes before the scheduled departure time. Passengers should allow enough time to park, check-in, and security screening procedures. At CHS boarding usually begins 30 or 45 minutes before the scheduled departure.
